About Allonby & The Coast...
Unlike the southern and central Lake District the Western Lake District and Solway Coast area is relatively unknown; yet this region has so much to offer. The roads are comparatively quiet and, if you crave solitude, many of them lead to the quiet sandy beaches and sandy beaches in this designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The Old Dairy is a gorgeous holiday cottage located in the small hamlet of Crosscannonby near the Georgian seaside village of Allonby. The Old Dairy sleeps two people and is the perfect tranquil retreat for any Lake District holiday with views overlooking the neighbouring fields and the Solway towards Criffle Mountain in southern Galloway, Scotland.
The Old Dairy is located on a working farm which has dairy cattle and sheep during the winter, the property is furnished and fitted to the highest standard and so has been awarded the prestigious Four Star Gold rating by Quality in Tourism.
This cottage is ideally situated for discovering the 'undiscovered' Lake District, including the quaint Seaside locations of Allonby and Silloth, the harbour town of Maryport and so much more, plus The Old Dairy is still with a short drive from some of the more well-known destinations such as: Keswick, Cockermouth and Carlisle (home of the first pillar postal box in Britain!).
Some of the hidden attractions 'on the door step' of The Old Dairy within a 10 minute walk are: St John the Evangelist's Church, Milefortlet 21 and the Salt Pans.
St John the Evangelist's Church, one the earliest Christian sites in Cumbria. The church dates from AD 1130, with the south aisle added during the 13th Century, this Grade I listed building is built from red sandstone blocks which originated from a former Roman building.
Milefortlet 21, the only element of Hadrian’s coastal defence of the northwest frontier to have been completely excavated and a World Heritage site. The chain of Milefortlets guarded the Cumbrian coast between Bowness-on-Solway, the western end of Hadrian’s Wall, Maryport and Ravensglass. This unique site also benefits a viewing platform over the exposed excavation. In addition to the Milefortlet, also located close to The Old Dairy are the remains of The Elizabethan salt pans where for more than 500 years, salt was produced from seawater along the Cumbrian coast. The site in Crosscannonby is one of the best preserved sites in Cumbria.
Outside the Old Dairy is a patio area complete with furniture and shared lawn area, all overlooking the Cumbrian countryside.
